Every structure—whether a building, fence, statue, piece of furniture, or artwork—has its own subtle energy. Vaastu is the science of working with these energy fields by arranging structures so their energies are beneficially aligned according to proportion and direction.
Vaastu is also the Vedic study of how structures influence the subconscious mind.
Energy in Vaastu
The energy of a house has two aspects:
1. Physical Aspect
Driven by: The five elements. Objects, activities, and items that affect the balance of these five elements in the home
2. Energy Aspect
Just like humans have a physical and an energy body, a house has an energy body.
This consists of 45 Devata energy fields, which influence the energy of the entire space.
Clockwise Energy Flow Depends on Three Factors
- Earth’s clockwise rotation → South & West are heavy, North & East are light
- Auspicious entrance that supports clockwise energy flow
- Resultant force that supports clockwise movement of energy
Why Do We Need Vaastu Shastra?
The purpose of a house is to provide an environment where you can relax, be at peace, and feel comfortable.
According to the Taittiriya Upanishad, we are made of five koshas:
Annamaya Kosha – Physical / Action Body (Beta)
Pranmaya Kosha – Energy / Feeling Body (Alpha)
Manomaya Kosha – Mind / Experience Body (Alpha, Theta)
Vigyanmaya Kosha – Intuitive Body (Theta)
Anandmaya Kosha – Bliss / Joy Body (Delta)
The quality of growth depends on the body from which consciousness is responding to life. Growth is directly proportional to what you contribute to the world, and that depends on the level from which you create and give.
Is Vaastu Scientific or Myth?
Earth rotates:
On its axis from West to East (clockwise) — creating day & night
Around the Sun in ~365 days
Celestial bodies appear to move East → West
This explains why the sun rises in the East and sets in the West.
Vaastu Shastra is based on two scientific principles:
1. Magnetic Property of the Earth
Earth formed 4.54 billion years ago from minerals and lava from the Sun.
Large iron content (solid & molten) makes the Earth a giant magnet.
North Pole emits energy; South Pole receives energy, creating a magnetic field.
When the Earth is divided into smaller plots, each behaves like an individual magnet with its own North–South polarity.
2. Rotation of Earth
Earth rotates West → East (clockwise).
We move along with it toward the North-East at ~1670 km/hr.
Buildings and usage should not work against this natural motion.
Example
Carrying a heavy box on a bike:
On the front: affects vision and comfort
On one side: creates imbalance
On the backside: stable and safe
Vaastu Equivalent
Heavy weight → South-West
Light weight → North-East
Medium weight → South-East & North-West
